The Restaurant toward the End of the Universe is the second book in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy satire science fiction "set of three of six books" by Douglas Adams, and is a sequel. It was initially published by Pan Books as a soft cover in 1980. The book was inspired by the song "Grand Hotel" by British musical crew Procol Harum. The book title refers to Milliways, the Restaurant toward the End of the Universe, one of the settings of the book.

Synopsis
Arthur Dent, Passage Administrator, Trillian, and Zaphod Beeblebrox leave the planet Magrathea on the Endearing personality. A Vogon ship paid off by Gag Halfrunt and a gathering of psychiatrists unfortunate that the discovery of A definitive Question will end their profession intercepts and fires at them. In the mean time, Arthur gets frustrated that the ship can't deliver any beverages past an undrinkable tea-like sludge and gives an extensive description of tea, causing Eddie the Shipboard PC to become stuck and unfit to fend the Vogon ship off. Desperate, Zaphod decides to hold a séance to call up his extraordinary grandfather Zaphod Beeblebrox the Fourth to rescue them. The senior Zaphod scolds his descendant and sends him on a quest to track down The Leader of the Universe to solve the political and financial stability tormenting the universe. He transports Zaphod and Marvin to Ursa Minor Beta, the tropical home planet of the offices of the Hitchhiker's Guide's publisher Megadodo Publications, and leaves the others on the ship in a dark void.
Following up on an idea from the piece of his cerebrum unaffected by his lobotomy, Zaphod goes searching for Zarniwoop, the Guide's lead manager, however his staff insist he has been out on an intergalactic cruise. A man named Roosta takes Zaphod to Zarniwoop's offices just as Frogstar fighters assault the structure and tow it to their home planets, Frogstar World B, a planet which collapsed through a monetary process called the "Shoe Occasion Skyline" which rendered its economy incapable to support any enterprises besides shoe stores. The planet in the end turned into the site of the Complete Perspective Vortex, a gadget that drives those that experience it frantic because of showing them their insignificant contributions to the limitless universe. Adhering to Roosta's instructions and escaping through Zarniwoop's office's windows, he is gotten by Gargravarr, a disembodied psyche who appears to Zaphod as a huge bird, and takes him to be exposed to the Vortex.
